Winnie, Besigye In Rare ‘Twitter PDA’
By Alex Masereka
We hardly ever see Kizza Besigye and his powerful wife, Winnie Byanyima exchanging ‘sweet nothings’ about their love for each other.
However, after Winnie was awarded an honorary degree by the University of Manchester as part of its Foundation Day celebrations, we saw some PDA…on twitter as the two seemed to be on cloud nine.
Winnie who also doubles as Oxfam Executive Director took to her twitter account to express her gratitude to those who stood by her and also respond to a tweet by Besigye.
Besigye, the former FDC presidential candidate who attended the historic occasion in the United Kingdom tweeted;
“Winnie delivered the Foundation Lecture (on advancing Women’s Rights)- the highlight- before conferment of honorary Doctorates. Congs!!”
In response, Winnie wrote, “You are my rock in times of trouble, you lift me up when I fall down
During the ceremony, Winnie delivered a lecture entitled ‘Advancing Women’s Rights in an Unequal World: A personal perspective.’
“Celebrating the award of an Honorary Doctorate of the University of Manchester to Winnie. It’s a great honour & recognition of her work. PTL,” Besigye wrote and shared a picture of his sweetheart as they enjoyed dinner with other friends.
To this Winnie said, “The Honor is 4 our collective struggles 4 equality, dignity & human rights.”
The two got married in 1998 and are the parents of one son, Anselm who she also mentioned in her tweets.
Winnie led Uganda’s first parliamentary women’s caucus which championed ground-breaking gender equality provisions in the country’s 1995 post-conflict constitution.
She has a BSc in Aeronautical Engineering from Manchester and returned to campus earlier this year to launch the University’s Global Development Institute, Europe’s largest research and teaching institute dedicated to international development.
