Democratic Republic of Congo prime minister resigns

Augustin Matata Ponyo said on Monday he has resigned as prime minister of Democratic Republic of Congo in accordance with a political deal made in October that extends Joseph Kabila’s tenure as president.

Kabila is due to step down on Dec. 19 but his ruling coalition and part of the opposition agreed to delay a presidential vote until April 2018, citing logistical problems registering millions of voters and a lack of financing.
