Gulu sets December deadline for the sale of sachet alcohol
By Serestino Tusingwire
Authorities in Gulu District have set 6th December as the deadline to effect the Sachet Alcohol ban.
This was after the Gulu district civic, religious and cultural leaders and 21 non-governmental organizations launched the ordinance at Gulu main market.
According to Ojara Mapinduzi, the Gulu LCV Chairman, this is not meant to stop people from drinking alcohol but it is to make them drink responsibly.
The objectives of the ordinance are to protect the health of persons under the age of 18 by preventing their access to alcoholic drinks and to protect the health of consumers from excessive consumption of alcoholic drinks among others.
Alcohol consumption is looked at by many as the main cause of poverty to some parts of the country and perhaps that’s why the Mukono Municipality MP, Betty Namboze is hopeful of tabling a bill in parliament to regulate alcohol consumption in Uganda.
