Makerere University Business School has today petitioned the speaker of parliament Rebecca Kadaga seeking parliament’s intervention into the matters of Makerere University main campus which is currently closed.
According to MUBS Academic Staff Chairperson, Prof. Arthur Ahimbisibwe, the closure of Makerere University directly affects MUBS mainly at the time graduation.
“We want parliament intervention into the matters of Makerere as soon as possible because over 5000 students who sat their final exams risk missing out on graduation in January if Makerere remain closed,” Ahimbisibwe said.
Prof Ahimbisibwe also wants parliament to support MUBS to become independent from Makerere University, arguing that the institution meets all requisite qualifications to stand alone.
The Speaker has therefore referred the matter to parliament’s committee on education and sports for handling.
Makerere University was closed at the start of November following a sit-down strike by the academic staff over unpaid incentive arrears amounting to Shs28bn.
It is more likely to re-open when the visitation committee that was situated to probe its issues recommends its opening.
