The Internal Affairs Minister, Gen. Jeje Odong has confirmed the Rwenzururu king, Charles Wesley Mumbere is currently detained at the highly guarded Nalufenya prison in Jinja district.
“The Omusinga was arrested and taken to police at Nalufenya in Jinja as we are managing the situation in Kasese.” Gen. Odong told journalists who met him at his office.
Mumbere was arrested on Sunday from his Kingdom, Rwenzururu and lifted in a police helicopter to Jinja following a heavy gunfire at his palace.
According to police spokesperson, Andrew Felix Kaweesi, Mumbere might face treason charges if it is found out that he was the mastermind of the massacre that claimed lives of over 60 people.
“Mumbere is solely to be blamed for what happened in Kasese because of his method of approach. He built this militia who attacked a UPDF senior officer with an improvised explosive.” Kaweesi said before adding that; “Police is carrying out investigations and if it is found out that he was the mastermind for the massacre, he will be charged with treason.”
Kaweesi said the situation in Kasese is currently very calm, life is normal and people are back to their businesses
