Trade Minister Intervenes In Skyrocketing Sugar Prices

The Minister of Trade, Industry and Co-operatives Amelia Kyambadde has called for a meeting of sugar manufacturers and other key stakeholders to discuss the hiked sugar prices.

According to Kyambadde, her ministry will meet sugar proprietors to discuss how best they can deal with this issue of sugar prices which soar day after another.

“I am meeting sugar factory owners; this is an emergency, they have to release reserves or we’re going to allow people to import.” Kyambadde said.

She however admits that this is because of drought that the country faced a few months back.

The price of sugar is currently between 4500 and 5000 Uganda shillings.

Traders who use sugar as a key ingredient in their products are already beginning to feel the pinch and are increasing the prices of their products too.

She also warned traders who are taking that excuse to a higher level by increasing prices of their products beyond normal level to stop it.
