AFCON 2017 DAY 3: Ivory Coast Held to a Goalless Draw as DR Congo wins 1:0
By Serestino Tusingwire
Ivory Coast which humiliated Uganda cranes with 3 goals to nil recently in a friendly match, was on Monday held to a goalless draw by Togo.
The defending champions Ivory Coast played Togo on Monday evening in their opening Group C match at the Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon.
All teams looked stronger and expected to win against each other, but at 90th minute, neither side found their fluency.
Wilfried Zaha, making his competitive debut for Ivory Coast after switching international allegiance from England, looked just about the liveliest player on show.
Both sides were guilty of wasting set-piece opportunities. Togo’s corners left a lot to be desired, while Ivory Coast fared no better from a series of free-kicks.
On the other hand, still in group C, DR Congo put their difficult Africa Cup of Nations build-up behind them to beat Morocco in their opening fixture, despite finishing with 10 men.
Four of the five games at the tournament have now been drawn.
