EC Petitions Speaker Over Staff Salary
By Serestino Tusingwire
The newly sworn in Electoral Commission has petitioned the speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga, seeking for her intervention on the state of its staff welfare.
While meeting the speaker, one of the commissioners Stephen Tashobya told her that the commission is one of the poorly paid government institutions whose salary structure was last revised 18years back.
He said that all officers starting from chairman down to returning officers are poorly enumerated, and this consequently impact on their performance and honesty.
The EC chairman, Justice Simon Byabakama had earlier presented the issue before the parliamentary committee on the Legal and Parliamentary Affairs saying that it is unfair to be paid the small salary they are being paid given the ever changing economic situation.
Byabakama therefore requested that in the next financial year, the commission should be given Shs123bn instead of Sh41bn which is reflected in Budget Framework Paper that creates a funding gap of Sh82bn.
The speaker promised to refer the matter to the relevant committee for deeper study.
