Kasese MPs Condemn Mumbere’s Re-arrest

Members of Parliament from Rwenzori Region have condemned the re-arrest of Rwenzururu King Charles Wesley Mumbere.

Mumbere who had just been released on bail by High court in Jinja on Friday, was re-arrested by police and is currently detained at Nalufenya police station in Jinja.

MPs led by the leader of opposition in parliament and Kasese Woman representative Winnie Kiiza say this was unlawful.

According to the Kasese Municipality MP, Robert Centinary, the king’s re-arrest was a betrayal of the entire kingdom by the president.

He based his statement on an agreement that he says the kingdom officials reached with the president against interfering with court proceedings.

“He really assured us that the court process must take route without impunity and all parties agreed not to interfere with the court process, but now you can see what the state has done, we are really disappointed.” Centinary said.

Police said Mumbere was re-arrested because the latest investigations discovered other charges which he individually committed during the clash.

It should be noted that Mumbere and over 150 Rwenzururu royal guards are battling charges not limited to murder, treason, aggravated robbery and terrorism which they allegedly committed in November last year in a clash with government forces.
