Gen Kale Kayihura was on Tuesday reappointed as Inspector General of Police for another three-year term by President Yoweri Museveni is the appointing authority.
Others whose contracts have been renewed for another three years include; Kayihura’s Deputy Okoth Ochola, Commissioner General of Prisons Johnson Byabashaija and his deputy James Mwanje.
This website understands that Museveni recently wrote a letter to the speaker of parliament who also heads the parliamentary appointments committee stating that police and prison authorities had recommended the above officers for renewal of contract.
“The Police Authority and Prison Authority have recommended the following officers for renewal of contract,” before listing names of the quartet that now await approval by the Parliament’s Appointments Committee.
“In line with Article 213 of the Constitution, I hereby nominate the officers for renewal of contract for three years,” the letter states.
Article 213 of the 1995 Constitution provides that the Inspector General of Police GP and his deputy shall be appointed by the President with the approval of Parliament.
It should however be noted that Kayihura has been receiving sharp criticisms from the public over the current security situation in the country characterized by violence, house break-ins, and robberies.
Kayihura and colleagues therefore await the vetting by the parliamentary appointments committee on a date yet to be announced by Kadaga who is its chairperson.
