Fire has gutted the Airtel regional service centre in Mbarara town.

According to an eye witness who preferred anonymity, the fire broke out at 7:00am in the morning. The regional centre is located along Mbarara High street.

The eye witness says that the fire started from inside the centre, but nobody from outside could realize there was fire until the manager opened the centre at 8:30a.m.

The fire destroyed phones, furniture, and computers, stationary among other items worth millions of money. Replacement of lost sim cards was been halted.

Management of the centre declined to comment on the exact cost of the property which was damaged.

The police fire brigade arrived at the centre early enough and managed to stop the fire from spreading to the next building.

Mbarara district internal security officer Robert Nuwamanya says that they struggled to put out the fire due to the absence of emergency exit and entry points on the structure.

Rwizi regional police spokesperson Samson Kasasira says that the police are investigating the cause of the fire.
