Mak Needs UGX 300m to Fix Mary Stuart Hall

About 300 million Shillings is required to renovate Mary Stuart hall, following a fire that gutted the  residence on Saturday morning.

The fire started from the canteen at around 4.a.m. and spread to other areas. On Tuesday, the Makerere University Council Chairperson Eng. Dr. Charles Wana-Etyem directed management to renovate the burnt building within two months before students report in August.

Makerere University Vice Chancellor, Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe says the council directed them to overhaul all halls of residence in the university. He however, says they will give priority to Mary Stuart Hall, adding that University engineers are currently assessing the cost of the repair.

Prof. Nawangwe also observed that the university has a few firefighting equipment in halls of residence.

He explains that they would have managed the Mary Stuart hall fire much better if the fire hydrants were functional. “This is going to be part of our plan during the overall face-lift of our halls of residence,” he said.
