Unity Fm Lira Journalists Police Bond Cancelled

Police bond is given after 48 hours but in Lira district, security agencies have failed to release 8 Journalists detained for 3 days.

While Joel Tubanone, Lira District Police Commander had given the 8 Journalists Police bond on monday, superior orders led to its cancellation today.

The celebrations did not last long as Police arrested Journalists and their visitors today.

On saturday, as UPDF and Police battled people who were threatening to harm Indians over death of Dickens Okello, the RDC Lira decided to switch off Unity fm allegedly for inciting violence.

All staff were arrested, their phones and equipment confiscated.

The 8 Journalists remain in police custody and radio switched off.

Aaron Olao, one of the journalists whilst a presenter with shut radio unity took to Facebook and wrote:

“Our bond has been cancelled. We have been rearrested. The Lira DPC says he has orders from above that we should be taken inside.

“All the 8 of us had appeared to extend our bond will be sent back.”

Lira RDC, Milton Odongo and  LC5 Chairman, Alex Patrick Oremo Alot who survived beating in Kole sub county have been blamed for fueling this conflict.

The two Indians were remanded. Government is trying to calm down people not to attack Indians.
