Mbarara City beat URA FC 2-0 on Friday at Kakyeka Stadium in their Pilsner Super 8 first-round match to book a date with Vipers SC in the semi-finals.
The first half was a dull affair ending 0-0 with both sides seemingly timid in front of the goal. It was more of the same when the game resumed for the second half and the game seemed destined for a draw.
However, a lapse in the URA defence saw the game spring to life after Ahebwa Brian received a left pass in the eighteen from Makwethi before dodging a defender and thereafter coolly placing the ball in the far post in the 68th minute to put the hosts in the lead to the delight of the home fans.
Thereafter URA FC woke up pressing to equalize but Mbarara City put up a sterling defense managing to keep the tax collectors at bay till the 90th minute.
Mbarara City was then able to score on the counter with Mucureezi Paul killing off the game in extra time in the 90+2.
Man of the Match was awarded to Mbarara City’s Okot Richard who put up a great defensive display to deny URA several chances to score. He walked away with a gong and UGX 200,000/- courtesy of sponsors Pilsner Lager.
The result means Mbarara City will face Vipers in the semi-finals of the competition at St. Mary’s Stadium Kitende while URA will host Proline.
On Sunday Onduparaka host Tooro United for their first-round fixture while on Tuesday Wakiso United host defending champions KCCA.
