UNACCEPTABLE! Contractors Probed for Shoddy work on UGX330Million Maternity ward

State minister of finance (General Duties) Henry Musasiizi assesses the defects on the building

Rubanda – The Bank of Uganda officials have directed Geses Uganda Limited and Redstone Holdings Limited contractors to rectify defects on the UGX330 Million maternity ward at Hamurwa Health centre IV ahead of the planned handover of the structure.

This course of action was revealed by the secretary of Bank of Uganda Susan Kanyemibwa, accompanied by the state minister for finance, planning and economic development (General Duties), Henry Ariganyira Musasizi were on the site visit of the construction of the maternity ward.

“This is the second time we’re visiting this facility under construction. The defects we found here, the other time, the contractor has failed to rectify them right now. This is unacceptable. The Bank of Uganda has invested a lot of money in this project. We’re now directing the contactors to sort this mess here within three weeks. Failure to do this, we shall blacklist them” Susan Kanyemibwa said.

Kanyemibwa also tasked the contractors to finish up the job as soon as possible so that the maternity ward is handed over for use by the public.

The structure which was near completion had been roofed with poor quality iron sheets compared to the large volumes of money the Bank of Uganda had released.

Reports also indicate that the floor of the structure and the ceiling was also poorly done yet the project was early to be handed over.

The structure was also poorly painted, and the face boards were also of poor quality.

According to Kanyemibwa, Bank of Uganda has established similar projects in nine regions of the country with Bank of Uganda regional offices.

Minister Musasizi, who’s also the area Member of Parliament for Rubanda East County reacted with anger and threatened to blacklist the contracted companies since the Public Procurement and Disposal of Public Assets Authority (PPDA) falls under his ministry of finance.

“Should you do shoddy work you will see me come for you? I don’t normally interfere in the works of engineers. That PPDA that registers you annually falls under my ministry. So should you do shoddy work here, your license won’t be renewed next time.” Musasizi said.

Musasizi speaking to the press said he had agreed with the site engineers to rectify their shoddy works so that the project is commissioned in early September 2021.
