Kobs Retain Uganda Cup
D-MARK Kobs Rugby proudly defended the prestigious Nile Special Uganda Cup on Saturday to celebrate the club’s 50th anniversary in style.
A fifth minute try from James Kimono opened the scoring KOBKOBS RETAIN UGANDA CUP for Kobs although Asuman Mugerwa was quick to touch down three minutes later to keep Heathens in the chase. Through a tight contest, it was remarkably hard for both sides to easily penetrate each other’s five-metre box for the try-line with Heathens’ two attempts unsuccessful as ball was held up.
Three penalties from youngster Joseph Aredo were just timely to surpass Heathens who were dominating 13-11 in the last 13 minutes of the game. A top-up try and penalty from Bishop Onen did not do much to save the Kyadondo side at their home. A well composed and confident Kobs side walked into the final confident of a day’s win capitalising on their arch rivals unpreventable mishaps that saw them miss services of key players Romano Ogwal and Denis Mulo who lost their dad together with injured Matthias Ochwo, suspended Alex Mubiru, Jude Kerimundu, and Evans Kingasia. Kobs also won the Lions Cup after edging last year’s holders Heathens on a 2-1 aggregate.
Heathens’ Bishop Onen was crowned man-of-the-match while champions Kobs and runners-up Heathens received a cash prize of Shs2.5m and Shs1.5m respectively.
