Cabinet Approves Uganda Minimum Wages Advisory Board Members

Cabinet has approved Members to serve on Uganda’s Minimum Wages Advisory Board, which will undertake studies and make proposals about a minimum wage in Uganda, for Government’s consideration.

Jim K. Muhwezi,
MINISTER OF INFORMATION AND NATIONAL GUIDANCE

“As you may be aware, there have been concerns and debate about a minimum wage in Uganda for a while. As a result, Government has been working towards resolving the issue by ensuring that Ugandan workers are not overly poorly remunerated by employers,” a press statement issued by Maj. Gen. Jim Muhwezi, Information and National Guidance Minister reads.

In the statement, Muhwezi further revealed that the body will make proposals to ensure that workers are not exploited, especially those in enterprises without vibrant Labour Unions.

The board will study the economic relationship between minimum wages, wage distribution, hours worked and poverty eradication, education, training as well as analyze the probable impact, if any, of the minimum wages on investment in Uganda.

It will also examine Uganda’s current wage policy and advise Government on the suitable considerations for determining minimum wages.

Muhwezi further said the board will prepare and submit a comprehensive report for Cabinet’s consideration within a period of nine months.

“Government will consider the proposals by the Board to review the minimum wage in Uganda, which was last set by Government in 1984 at Shs 6,000/= (Six thousand shillings only) by Statutory Instrument No. 38 of 1984.”
