Amuge accuses Onyanga (R) of siring a child with Ageyo Joina (L), a vendor as Soroti market and wife to Ben Odongo
The Director and Proprietor of Goshen Nursery and Primary School, Winnie Amuge, has petitioned the High Court in Soroti seeking justice after her estranged husband, George Wilson Onyanga, allegedly attempted to fraudulently take over her properties and investments using armed soldiers and malicious prosecutions.
In the detailed court filings, Amuge accuses her husband of orchestrating a campaign of harassment, including hiring armed UPDF soldiers to intimidate her and instituting multiple criminal cases against her to coerce her into surrendering her assets to him.
According to Amuge, the latest legal battle marks the climax of a 25-year marriage marred by violence, emotional abuse, and deceit.
MALICIOUS CRIMINAL CASES AND THREATS
In her sworn affidavit, Amuge describes her husband as abusive, violent, and emotionally draining, claiming she endured years of his conduct before the situation escalated beyond control.
She states that in the grand scheme of things, Onyanga maliciously opened several criminal files — GEF 001/2025, CRB 024/2025, and CRB 013/2023 — all designed to intimidate and humiliate her.
Amuge further alleges that Onyanga repeatedly threatened her with pangas and sticks, prompting her to file reports with Soroti DPC Mr. Byansi, RPC Ms. Damalie Nachuha, and RCC Mr. Peter Pex Paak.
Despite those interventions, she says the threats intensified — citing the 2023 shooting death of her private guard, Bosco Opolot, interpreted as part of a broader intimidation campaign aimed at forcing her to relinquish her business empire.
She also accuses Onyanga of stealing her vehicle, a Mercedes Benz ML. Reg. No. UBM 193J, which she reported under CRB 026/2025 at Soroti Central Police Station.
COURT ISSUES PROTECTION ORDER
Fearing for her life, Amuge ran to court seeking protection. In July 2025, the Soroti Court granted her prayers.
According to court documents, Her Worship Nantongo Sarah, in Miscellaneous Cause No. 28 of 2025, issued a Protection Order against Onyanga after finding “overwhelming evidence” of his cruel and violent conduct.
The court ordered Onyanga to vacate the matrimonial home on Plot 775 Block 7 Amen B, Soroti City, and barred him from entering or approaching Goshen Nursery and Primary School on Plot 1–3 Edyegu Lane.
He was further restrained from interfering with the day-to-day management of the school.
The ruling followed overwhelming evidence, including CCTV footage showing four armed UPDF soldiers and two civilians storming the school on June 9, 2025 — an incident linked to Onyanga.
He did not appeal the ruling.
DPP ORDERS HUSBAND TO BE CHARGED
In a fresh twist, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has directed that Onyanga be charged with theft of a motor vehicle (Mercedes Benz ML. Reg. No. UBM 193J) belonging to Amuge unless the vehicle is returned within 30 days.
A letter from the DPP dated 10th September 2025, referenced SOR-CO-148-2025, addressed to the Regional Officer in Soroti, followed a petition from M/S Omongole & Co. Advocates—Amuge’s legal team—requesting a review of the criminal cases her husband had initiated.
After examining the evidence, the DPP found the cases against Amuge “misinformed, misguided, and misdirected,” concluding that Onyanga’s actions amounted to abuse of due process.
In the official communication (Ref: SOR-CO-148-2025), the DPP stated: “The prosecution of Ms. Winfred Amuge, who also happens to be the wife of the complainant Onyanga George Wilson, was misinformed, misguided, and misdirected. Mr. Onyanga provided no evidence to show any contribution to the property or investments of his wife.”
The DPP emphasized that the Ministry of Education and Sports registration clearly lists Goshen Nursery and Primary School as a sole proprietorship owned by Ms. Amuge.
The letter concluded that:
“The criminal offences initiated by Mr. Onyanga appear to be a diversionary attempt and a quest to unlawfully regain ownership of the property, amounting to an abuse of due process. Police are therefore directed to close the files as the only remedy available is civil redress.”
In a new legal escalation, Amuge has filed a petition in the Soroti High Court seeking nullification of her marriage, citing fraud, misrepresentation, and misconduct.
In her petition, Amuge claims that her marriage to the respondent, celebrated on July 31, 1999, at Rock View Baptist Church, is legally invalid due to the church’s lack of a valid license to conduct marriages at the time.
Amuge recently discovered that the church officer, Reverend John Echeru, who officiated the ceremony, was not authorized to conduct marriages, rendering the union void.
Further complicating matters, Ms. Winnie Amuge alleges that her husband George Wilson Onyanga, a former pastor at Rock View Baptist Church, was fully aware of the church’s unlicensed status but kept this information concealed, thereby leading her into a fraudulent marriage.
In addition to the annulment of the marriage, Amuge is seeking full custody of their 11-year-old daughter, Onyanga Joan Winnie. She also demands that the husband be denied any share of her properties, including a school, vehicles, and land, which she asserts belong solely to her.
Among the key contested properties are several plots of land in Soroti City and the Goshen Nursery and Primary School itself — an institution she founded and developed through years of personal investment and donor support. She asserts that her husband, who had no financial or developmental role in establishing the school, was jobless and is attempting to falsely claim ownership through coercive means.
She further accuses Onyanga of engaging in extramarital affairs, which she claims resulted in the birth of an illegitimate child, Alimo Elliana Onyanga, from one Ageyo Joina, a wife to Mr Ben Odongo.
Amuge filed a Birth Certificate No.844128 as proof of her husband’s infidelity.
Its also alleged that the husband has been engaging in offside romps with church and non-church members which embarrassed her but the husband would have none of it despite repeated interventions by the Church leadership leading to his ex-communication from the Church.
These allegations are said to add to the emotional and financial strain that led to the divorce petition.
Winnie Amuge is seeking damages amounting to UGX 500,000,000 for the emotional distress and financial loss she claims to have suffered. Additionally, she is requesting a permanent injunction to prevent the respondent from accessing her properties in the future.
Legal experts suggest that the case could set a precedent for annulments based on fraudulent conduct and church marriage licenses in Uganda.
The case has triggered public debate in Soroti, with many residents and women’s rights activists expressing concern over the alleged misuse of armed forces in private disputes.
Several education sector stakeholders have called for justice, warning that the targeting of female entrepreneurs through fraudulent relationships and property disputes is becoming a growing problem.
A senior legal officer in Soroti who preferred anonymity said, “If proven, this case will set an important precedent in protecting women’s property rights and in addressing fraud within marital relationships.”
The Soroti High Court has since acknowledged receipt of the petition and is expected to fix a hearing date in the coming weeks. The respondent, Onyanga George Wilson, is yet to file his response or defence.
As the legal battle unfolds, Amuge remains under protection and continues to manage her school under heightened security. She insists her fight is not just personal, but also a stand against the abuse of marriage and military power to oppress women.
“I worked hard to build everything I own with the help and support of my friends from the United Kingdom and United States who have exhibited unwavering generosity towards me and the disadvantaged children they have continually supported to educate thru my School.
“No one should use marriage as a weapon to take what doesn’t belong to them,” Winnie concluded shortly after her lawyers had filed the petition.
A lawyer conversant with the case, who requested anonymity, said the hubby Onyanga is seeking an equal share of his wife’s multimillion investments and property.
When contacted, Richard Omongole, counsel for Amuge, confirmed that the matter is before court but declined to discuss details, saying, “We await Mr. Onyanga’s day in court.”
Repeated phone calls to George Wilson Onyanga (Tel: 0701***727) went unanswered by the time of filing this story.
