FDC Supporters Question Muntu’s Style Of Leadership

Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) supporters in Kasese are questioning the ability of the Party President Maj. Gen Mugisha Muntu to outshine other players on the political scene with a laid-back personality.
The members, from one of FDC stronghold districts in Uganda claim that the party’s capabilities are being questioned ahead of the 2016 general election in the absence of an aggressive leader.
Perceived by many as mature and diplomatic, Mugisha Muntu is defined by a calm character, an opposite of Dr Kiiza Besigye’s assertive charisma that kept FDC buoyant since its formation in 2005. Muntu succeeded Dr Besigye in 2013.
But Jackson Mbaju Katika, an FDC mobilizer in Kasese told a party meeting at the Gardens Hotel in Kasese town last evening that Dr Besigye’s approach in tackling issues through aggressive means was a good mobilization tool for the party. He adds that the softness witnessed over the last two years, may spell doom for FDC in forthcoming polls.
“We are failing to explain issues to the local population because the question has always been why the new president is not visible. So we need to ask the national office and the president to wake up if we are to strengthen our support in Kasese,” Mbaju said.
Robert Centenary, a mobilizer for Kasese Municipality described as cowardly and betrayal, a decision by Gen. Muntu to call off his tour of Kasese district on January 24 just after the Resident District Commissioner Maj. James Mwesigye threatened to block the party’s planned rallies.
He said the members in the villages were ready to challenge the RDC if he attempted to block the rallies in Kasese town, Kabatunda trading center, and Mpondwe primary school in Mpondwe-Lubiriha town council. They were however let down when the party president succumbed to NRM’s suffocation tactics, he adds.
But Winfred Kiiza, the Kasese district woman member of parliament and Vice Chairperson of the FDC executive in Kasese defended Gen.
Muntu saying that his approach was equally good for the party.
She added that Gen. Muntu was first organizing the head office, before the nationwide tour to mobilize for structures which are a pillar for capturing state power in 2016.
Kiiza added that the retirement of Dr. Kizza Besigye does not mean that he cannot become a flag bearer for the party in the 2016 elections if the delegates so wish.
