Fiji, Uganda Sign Diplomatic Ties

Fiji and Uganda have established diplomatic ties, the Fijian government announced Tuesday.

At a ceremony at the Uganda Mission to the United Nations in New York, the United States earlier this week, Peter Thomson, Fiji’s permanent representative to the UN and his Ugandan counterpart Richard Nduhuura signed a joint communique establishing diplomatic relations between the two countries, according to the Ministry of Information.

The communique expressed the desire of the two countries to establish their diplomatic relations in accordance with the provisions of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, guided by the principles and purposes of the United Nations Charter and the international law.

It called for the promotion and strengthening of bonds of friendship and cooperation between Fiji and Uganda in political, economic, cultural, humanitarian and other fields.

Following the formalization ceremony, the two ambassadors held talks on areas of common interest between the two countries, including issues currently facing the Group of 77 at the United Nations. In concluding the meeting, the two assured each other of the mutual support of their missions in the furtherance of common causes in multilateral affairs. (Xinhua)
