Four Found Guilty of Shooting Gen Kayumba
Kayumba Nyamwasa fell out with Rwanda's President Paul Kagame
Four of the six suspects accused of trying to kill a former general from the Rwandan army have been found guilty of attempted murder by a South African court while two others were acquitted.
Nyamwasa accused the men of working for the Rwandan government.
In 2010, the gun attack the accused are charged over left Nyamwasa’s wounded in stomach.
A year later, police broke up another plot to kill him, and early this year armed men attacked his Johannesburg house in a separate incident.
Armed men raided the home of Lt Gen Nyamwasa, the Rwandan army’s former chief of staff, in March, but he was not there at the time.
The attackers ransacked the property, and left with a computer and some documents.
Gen Nyamwasa has survived two previous assassination attempts, including a shooting in Johannesburg in 2010 after fleeing Rwanda.
He sought asylum in South Africa after falling out with Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame.
South African officials said at the time the incident was “the last straw” for the government, following two previous attempts on Nyamwasa’s life in 2010 and the murder of former Rwandan spy chief, Patrick Karegeya last December.
Nyamwasa and Karegeya, both critics of Rwandan President Paul Kagame, co-founded the Rwandan opposition party, National Congress.
