The under 20 men’s handball team is in a residential camp in Entebbe in advance of the biannual 2013 U20 African Challenge championship set on 6th-12th April 2013 in Djibouti.
The team which has No sponsor is housed at Sports beach and trains at Nkumba University handball bumpy courts, is going through financial hardships that would even limit the exact number of players that Coach Ssemujju Frank wants to take. “We are badly-off here in camp” a stressed coach, Ssemujju Frank told the Red Pepper reporter. “But we call upon the Government, National Council of Sports and the Ministry of Education and Sports to come and support us.we are going to represent the Nation, but you can imagine it that most my players have no passports” He added.
Uganda men’s team won the U20 Zone 5 tourney last year where Rwanda, Kenya (hosts), Burundi, Tanzania, South Sudan and Comoros
Island took part. The Uganda men’s team beat their Kenya counterparts 34-32 in the finals while the Kenya Ladies team beat Uganda on a-24-18 score. Both winning teams will represent the Zone at the former event (2013 U20 African Challenge championship).
Talking to The Red Pepper Online in an exclusive interview, Ssemujju Frank promised better results despite the fact that it is his team’s first appearance at the continental level. “We expect to do well though we are debutants at the championship,I know we are the underdogs but we
will beat big teams like Nigeria and others for fine results”.Ssemujju assured.
The team that begun residential training on 14th March with 17 players will depart at Entebbe airport on 4th next month with 4 officials Ssemujju Frank (Head coach),Opoka Benard (Asst coach), Onjima Albertto (Senior coach/Adviser) and Shirah Agonzebwa
