Addressing media at state house yesterday morning, Museveni said people refers to him as Sabalwanyi (fighter). He noted that there is no competition because NRM cannot lose elections. Museveni said he is incomparable to other candidates.

“Yoweri Museveni is by far the most qualified candidate in terms of knowledge on how to run the country…That is why he is called Sabalwabyi. You cannot compare Museveni with others,” he said.

Defending Crime Preventers

He defended the crime preventers arguing that the group have helped to stamp put crimes and is a mere police reserve.

“Crime preventers are a police reserves. In all countries modern counties, there is always police reserve, sometimes, there is always army reserves. These are just reserves of the police force,” he noted.

The issue of crime preventers has attracted international attention. Last month Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, Human Rights Network Uganda (HURINET-U), Chapter Four Uganda, and Foundation for Human Rights Initiative (FHRI) asked government to disband the group.

In a statement, Human Rights Watch “crime preventers are strongly affiliated with the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party. Its members have acted in partisan ways and carried out brutal assaults and extortion with no accountability.”

Museveni has revealed that there are plans to deploy the army ahead of the February general elections.
