Ingrid Turinawe Arrested

Luweero police are holding Ingrid Turinawe, the FDC women league chairperson for allegedly attempting to force her way into the Electoral Commission tally center.

 

Lameck Kigozi, the Savannah Regional Police spokesperson says that Turinawe attempted to enter the tally center without accreditation.

According to Kigozi, Turinawe is currently being held at Luweero Central Police Station on charges of criminal trespass. Kigozi says that they have tightened security at the tally center as the ballot boxes from all the 375 polling centers trickle in.

The arrest of Turinawe, brings to eight the number of people arrested in connection to the Luweero district Woman MP by elections.

The other suspects are Job Walulya, Henry Muwonge, Fred Kabanda, Umar Muhamadi, Samuel Mugwanya, Ibrahim Ssentongo and Emmanuel Kirabira, all DP supporters.

They are facing charges of defacing the campaign posters of Rebecca Nalwanga, the NRM candidate. Provisional results from 33 of the 375 polling stations declared by the electoral commission put Brenda Nabukenya, the opposition candidate in the lead.

The vote count from the 33 polling stations shows that Nabukenya polled 2802 closely followed by NRM’s Rebecca Nalwanga with 2364 votes.

Nabukenya swept the polls at Kavule, Kande, Nsawo, Matembe, Kiso, Nabinuka, Kikandwa, Luweero S.S A and B, Gulama and Kyampologoma polling stations among others.

Nalwanga won Kamira Sub County by 1584 while Nabukenya polled 1260 votes.

The preliminary results have sparked a wave of excitement amongst Nabukenya’s supporters in Bombo, Wobulenzi, Katikamu and Luweero town council.

In Kikyusa town trading center, police fired teargas to disperse jubilant supporters of Nabukenya who were celebrating her early lead.

Jotham Taremwa, the electoral commission spokesperson has called for calm and warned politicians against declaring the winner before the commission releases the final result.

The seat fell vacant after the appellate Court ruled on that the process which took Nabukenya to parliament saying it was none compliant with the law.
