Kadaga Roots For Agricultural Entrepreneurship

The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon Rebecca Kadaga has called for adoption of agricultural entrepreneurship models in Uganda.

The Speaker was officiating at the launch of the Songhai Model in Uganda facilitated by the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development on Thursday 8th December 2016 at Imperial Royale Hotel.

The Songhai Model, founded by Professor Rev. Godfrey Nzamujo in Benin, focuses on the use of agro-biological production and promotes functional training in agricultural entrepreneurship. The model aims to promote sustainable development through youth entrepreneurship.

Kadaga said that she totally supports the Songhai Model and encouraged the Ugandan Government to adopt it and promote it among the youth.

“It is a very impressive model that we need to embrace. I visited a Songhai Model village in Benin and was quite impressed. Every piece of grass and vegetation is utilized for agriculture,” Kadaga said, adding that, “I learnt that we can utilize the water hyacinth on water bodies to produce bio-gas.”

The Speaker said that the Songhai Model will address issues of unemployment especially among the youth in the villages and agricultural productivity of both crops and livestock.

She added that the model is a perfect example of how the environment can contribute to economic development.

The United Nations Development Programme Acting Country Representative, Thomas Ole-Kuyan, said that the Songhai Model is an integrated approach enabling young people to become entrepreneurs using sustainable practices that further mentor development.

“UNDP is committed to supporting Uganda to achieve the middle class status through supporting the Songhai Model,” Ole-Kuyan said.

As part of the launch, Prof. Rev. Nzamujo made a presentation on the functionality of the Model which involved the use of various agricultural techniques to increase agricultural productivity. He said that every community has the ability to be productive using biomass and effective Micro-organism technology.
