Kami Kabangu Crowned 2013 Basketball MVP

Right from the start, Kami Kabange wondered why he couldn’t be the MVP. It turns out, nothing could stop him.

The Congolese-born Rwandan big man officially became the FUBA’s men’s playoffs Most Valuable Player (MVP) at the 2013 basketball awards on Saturday and made history as the only City Oilers player to win the award, which was no surprise given his spectacular season and Oiler’s leap to a league-leading wins, a 4-3 final series victory over Falcons and averaging a personal 18.4 points and 10.5 rebounds through the series.

In his first year, the dynamic big man led the Oilers to their best season since coincidently their first in the championship.

“It really just came out,” Kami said when Red Pepper Online Sport caught up with him on Sunday afternoon. “That’s the way I thought at the beginning of the finals. I put a lot of hard work into my game, especially during the playoffs. … I dedicated my whole time to basketball. Even though it was tough, I did it.”

The glamorous event held at the Imperial Royale Hotel on Saturday night also saw Vegetarian’s Bernard Okumu was named regular season MVP of the men’s National Basketball League while Peace Proscovia UCU Canons to a record of 21 wins and no losses also scoped women’s finals MVP.

Magic Stormers’ Carol Nyafono won women’s regular season MVP.

On the night, FUBA announced that men’s and women’s Airtel National Basketball Leagues will receive an extra Shs3m in prize money.
