Police Fire Teams carrying out rescue operations on the scene by Friday evening
Three bodies have been recovered from a collapsed building in Kisasi following a joint search by police and Kampala Capital City Authority – KCCA teams.
The three-storey building under construction in Kisota Zone, Kikaya, Kisasi, collapsed from the top floor on Friday, with builders on site.
Residents said a sudden, thunderous bang sent people running, mistaking it for an earthquake. Moments later, a massive cloud of dust revealed that the building next door had collapsed.
Neighbors, led by the Kisota Road area chairperson, John Kisembo, said the building caved in suddenly while several construction workers were on site.
He said residents rescued eight workers, some were hurt while fleeing the first floor, while others were pulled from the rubble, and all eight were taken to Malcolm Medical Centre in Kisasi by Red Cross teams who were among the first responders.
Police, Fire, and Rescue teams first arrived with water trucks, expecting a fire, but turned back once they realized heavy excavators were more urgent as survivors were still reportedly receiving calls from colleagues trapped on the upper floors.
Aisha Nakanwagi, an area Councillor told URN at the scene that rescue operations to dig through the rubble started around 4 pm and ended by 8:00 pm with the team to avoid injuring victims still feared trapped inside.
“The search started late after hours, and it was clear it would be hard to find anyone alive. We had lost hope, and by 4:00 pm on Friday , that is when they got the first body,” She said.
Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson Rachel Kawala identified the three male victims as Jonathan Kivumbi, Rasta James, and a third person who has yet to be identified.
“The bodies of the deceased have been transported to Mulago National Referral Hospital for postmortem examination, and further updates will be provided as more information becomes available,” Kawala said.
By press time, the rescue operation was still ongoing as teams dug through the rubble searching for possible bodies and survivors, while the hunt for the site engineer and the site owner also continued.
