Lukwago, Mao Lock Horns Over 2016 Campaigns

Erias Lukwago, the embattled city Lord Mayor has blasted Norbert Mao, the Democratic Party president for blocking members from engaging in early campaigns ahead of the 2016 general elections.

It comes days after Mao was quoted in the local media accusing DP members especially in Buganda region for holding rallies without authorization from the party leadership.

Mao said the party leadership hadn’t yet agreed on how to go out to the public and urged party members of restrain themselves.

However, Lukwago will not have any off this.

According to Lukwago, such a directive will curtail internal democracy, as well as limit the party’s attempts to garner more support ahead of the general elections.

He argues that this is an opportune time for opposition parties to rally against the ruling NRM party, if they are to unseat President Yoweri Museveni.

Moses Kasibante, the Rubaga North MP likened Mao’s declaration on early campaigns to the NRM caucus resolution in Kyankwanzi early this month.

During the NRM retreat, Justine Lumumba, the party secretary general warned to disqualify members who engage in early campaigns.

Kasibante says this trend should not infiltrate the opposition, which has been fighting against undemocratic means.

Lukwago has also rubbished reports that he is planning to unseat Mao as DP president.

He however says it is healthy to discuss succession matters within the party.
