Lukwago Warns Government On Trimming His Powers

The cabinet committee has convened to review the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) Act in a move to curb the Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago’s powers.

Recently, the minister for Kampala, Betty Kamya expressed the need to amend KCCA act in order to harmonize the three big lions – that is Lord Mayor, Executive Director Jennifer Musisi and the Minister for Kampala, by clearly defining everybody’s line of duty.

However, Lukwago has vowed to fight the amendment of KCCA Act saying it is intended to reduce the powers the government puts in the Authority presided over by him.

“Should they be tempted to proceed with those arrangements, they will be setting the stage for yet another round of battles which would be very unfortunate” Lukwago said.

“We want to settle down and engage in developmental activities, we want to work with one another within the Authority” he added.

Lukwago criticized the committee saying they are only wasting tax payers’ money because the move is interfering with the sovereignty of the people to elect their leader which they are not going to allow.

“We are not going to agree on issues of tinkering with the law to entrench one man’s rule; that is totally unacceptable. We are not going to allow the manipulation of laws to do away with the sovereignty of the people in Kampala and entrench bad governance” Lukwago said.
