Museveni was appointed by the third Emergency Summit of Head of States of East African Community on the situation in Burundi on Monday, 7th July to lead and facilitate dialogue on Burundi crisis.

“President Yoweri Museveni has left for Burundi Capital Bujumbura to seek dialogue among warring political factions as part of EAC efforts to find a lasting solution to the current political situation in Burundi,” Lindah Nabusayi, President’s Deputy Press Secretary said today morning.

However Red Pepper quoting an International Media reported that soon after Museveni’s appointment to lead dialogue, Burundi Opposition Political Parties rejected him.

“Museveni has been in power since 1986; can he help the Burundian president to understand that a mandate limit is important? No,” Frederic Bamvuginyumvira, deputy leader of the Front for Democracy, one of the political parties in Burundi said while responding to Museveni’s appointment.  “I expect nothing from his work.’’

It remains uncertain if Museveni led peace talks will yield desired outcome as opposition parties doubt his democracy credentials.

Burundi has been shadowed by unrest since April this year when current president, Pierre Nkurunziza announced that he would run for a third term.

Thereafter, demonstrators, mainly supporters of opposition political parties thronged to streets demanding Nkurunziza to revert his desire to contest.
