Makerere Dons Threaten to Strike

Makerere University dons have today issued an ultimatum to the government threatening to strike if they are not paid their June salaries.

Makerere University Academic Staff Association (MUASA) chairman Dr. Muhamed Kigundu today said that government has not paid academic staff’s salaries of June this year.

He said academic staff is on busy session marking exams for last semester, supervising those on internship and preparing for the next semester which is due next month, so they are highly in need of their salary.

“We want our salary paid by Friday or we declare strike” Kiggundu said.

This won’t be appreciated since it will affect the scheduled date for the start of the next academic year 2016/17 due 6th August, 2016.

Makerere University besides good academic performance is very much known of strikes. It is remembered that before the closure of last semester, the non-teaching staff went on strike demanding for an increase on their pay.

If students do not strike, it’s the academic staff to strike, if not, then the non-teaching staff takes on.
