Minister Bahati Listens to M7, Quits 2026 MP Race

Minister of State for Trade, Industry and Cooperatives (Industry), Hon. David Bahati, has announced that he will not contest in the 2026 general elections.

In an official statement released after meeting President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni on the sidelines of the 27th National Prayer Breakfast, Bahati said his decision follows “deep reflection and wide consultations” with the President, NRM party leaders, and supporters in Ndorwa County West.

“I will not offer myself as an independent candidate in the forthcoming 2026 General Elections,” Bahati declared, emphasizing that his choice was guided by a desire to “preserve the unity and stability of the NRM party and ensure peace and harmony within the district.”

Bahati, who has represented Ndorwa County West in Parliament since 2006, expressed gratitude to his constituents for their support during his nearly 20 years in elective politics.

“Your trust and confidence in me remain one of my greatest honors. I’m deeply humbled by your steadfast belief in my leadership and service,” he said.

He also reiterated his loyalty to the NRM, citing Article 8(4)(e) of the party constitution, which bars district chairpersons from standing or campaigning against official party flag bearers.

Bahati said he will continue serving the people of Kabale, Kigezi, and Uganda in other capacities:

“Although I will not be on the ballot, I remain committed and available to serve for a better, prosperous, and united greater Kabale and Kigezi in various capabilities.”

The minister called on his supporters to remain calm and continue mobilizing support for President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni and the NRM ahead of the 2026 General Elections, urging them to “protect the gains” made under the current government.
