Minister Nantaba Chokes On 24million Debt

The order was issued out by Deputy Registrar Tom Chemtai after Nantaba and her lawyer made no show in court yesterday despite having received summons last month directing her to appear and show cause why she should not pay the said money to Kiberu.

The money that landed the minister in trouble arises from litigation costs that court awarded to Kiberu  in November  last year by High Court judge Alphonse Owiny-Dollo after a legal battle in which court quashed Nantaba’s orders of giving away Kiberu’s 38 acres of land located in Wasozi Kitende to another family following a dispute.

Justice Owiny–Dollo in his ruling directed that matters of ownership of land should be left to be handled and determined by court before ordering the minister to pay Kiberu the legal costs of the suit.

While appearing in court yesterday, Kiberu’s lawyer Patrick Katende in addition to applying to have the minister’s salary attached, she also applied to have her arrested and sent to the civil prison of Luzira for failure to pay the said money but registrar Chemtai declined.

Minister Nantaba soon after being appointed as state minister for lands went on rampage to fight for the ‘voiceless’ a move she said was to help the poor and vulnerable to repossess  their land.
