Nkumba Lady Marines have finally picked their maiden win in the 2022 women’s division of the Tusker Lite National Basketball League (NBL) following their 47-56 triumph over Nabisunsa Girls on Wednesday evening at the MTN Arena, Lugogo in Kampala.
The matchday nine (final game of round one) victory for Nkumba means that all teams in the 10-team women’s division have at least picked a victory in the opening phase of the campaign though the university side will have to pull up their socks if they are to stay in the top tier division.
Nkumba are 9th on the table with 10 points whilst Nabisunsa are at the rock bottom with 8 points after seven games (one win six losses). The secondary school outfit have two games left to wind down the first round of the league.
Nkumba’s Joan Nampungu led her side to glory shooting 15 points, 20 rebounds and 7 assists on the night. She was named Tusker Lite player of the match.
Other performers for Nkumba were Shadia Mbwali with 20 points, 8 rebounds and 2 assists and Isabella Namugabo with 11 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists.
In a losing effort, Tamasha Nsubuga led Nabisunsa with 11 points, 5 rebounds and 2 assists. Darlene Tashobya had 8 points and 5 rebounds.
In the men’s division, title holders City Oilers finally returned to action after a long hiatus. They beat Our Saviour 50-77 in the other game played on Wednesday evening.
The Tusker Lite National Basketball League returns on Friday at Lugogo. Action continues throughout the weekend.
