Addressing a press conference at the commission headquarters yesterday, Kiggundu denied media reports that Independent Presidential candidate presidential candidate Amama Mbabazi is in control of the body.

“Nobody controls this EC. We shall continue making our independent decisions,” Kiggundu said.

Commenting on the Sunday clash between supporters Amama Mbabazi and President Museveni, he implored the two candidates to stop actions that disrupt public order.

“As EC waits for the report on Ntungamo incident we wish to reiterate our utter condemnation of acts of violence during electoral process, he said, adding, “We urge candidates to prevail upon their supporters and agents to desist from any actions that may lead to disruption of public order.”

Kiggundu called for a tolerant approach to political debate so that Uganda can have peaceful, free and fair elections.

Yesterday, the Electoral Commission started issuing a complete set of the “photo-bearing national voters’ register” to all presidential candidates in the 2016 elections.

The Voters’ register bears names of all 15 million registered voters arranged alphabetically by surname at each of the 28,010 polling stations.

Kiggundu said the purpose of issuing voters’ register is to enable “candidates ensure only eligible persons are allowed to vote at respective polling stations.”
