MPs Raise Shs150m For Kasubi Tombs Restoration
The Parliamentary Community has contributed Shs153 million in a fundraising drive towards the restoration of Kasubi Royal Tombs.
The tombs, a site of the burial grounds for four kings of Buganda, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site were destroyed by a fire in March 2010.
The fundraising drive under the “Kasubi masiro Ggwanga Mujje” initiative was conducted by Buganda Premier Charles Peter Mayiga during a visit to Parliament on Tuesday.
He was hosted by the Speaker of Parliament in conjunction with the Buganda Parliamentary Caucus.
A dummy cheque worth Shs100 million was presented to the Premier by Speaker Rebecca Kadaga during the ceremony as contribution from Cabinet, Members of Parliament and Parliamentary Staff.
Kadaga noted that the final total of the contributions would be made in due time since more members were still contributing.
10 independent members of parliament from Buganda Region also raised a contribution of Shs10 million. Their contribution was presented to the Kattikiro by Kibanda county MP Sam Otada.
The other independent members collectively raised Shs5million as contribution from the Independent Members Caucus.
Leader of Opposition Nandala Mafabi contributed Shs2 million while MP Medard Lubega Ssegona in his capacity as the Shadow Minister for Constitutional Affairs also contributed Shs2 Million to the cause.
Ssegona says he is still whipping the Shadow Cabinet and pledged a contribution of not less than Shs6 million.
Trade Minister Amelia Kyambadde who whipped members of the Cabinet presented a contribution of UGX 15 million.
Government Chief Whip Justine Lumumba noted that NRM legislators had jointly raised Shs70 million.
The Katikiiro of Buganda noted that he was humbled by the contribution made by parliamentarians to the restoration of Kasubi Royal Tombs and called for harmony in nation building saying that apart from the Tombs being a heritage of Buganda Kingdom, they are a heritage of the Country.

I’m surprised that grass thatched shrines need billions of money! Are we contributing to put up this time skyscraper shrines made of bricks, tiles, tarazzo, glasses or? Where is all that money geared to?
