Kagezi Murder: Phone Printouts Pin Six Senior Police Bosses

Principal State Attorney Joan Namazzi Kagezi talked to six police bosses hours before she was shot, Red Pepper online reports.

New phone printouts obtained by investigators indicate the state attorney was in touch with the officers in the last 24 hours of her life on earth.

Kagezi, the former deputy Director of Public Prosecution in charge of international crimes and crimes against humanity was gunned down on March 30, 2015 as she approached her home in Kiwatule from work.

Ever since then however, Police is still grappling to apprehend her assailants.

But in an ironic twist of events, at least six senior cops may soon be grilled over her death as police finally turns its own into possible suspects.

According to the printouts obtained from a leading telecom company whose identity is withheld for fear of jeopardizing investigations, the six Police officers’ numbers communicated repeatedly with Kagezi a few hours to her murder.

Investigators now want the cops to explain the coincidence of such communication and the underlying motive.

“These six senior Police officers’ numbers are among those of people who were in close contact with Kagezi and I don’t know what we shall do about that,” a senior detective handling the file intimated to Red Pepper.

The detective revealed that they have since forwarded the phone printouts to the CIID director and they are awaiting her advice on the matter.

At the time of her death, Kagezi was helping police in investigating high profile cases including the murder of sheikhs by suspected Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) gunmen.

The Inspector General of Police Gen Kale Kayihura warned of tough times ahead if security organs fall short of arresting killers of Kagezi.

“It’s a challenge to us and we must fight hard to see that these killers are found and prosecuted or else we are at a risk if we don’t get them,” Kayihura said while businessmen at Kampala Protea Hotel.

“However, we are confident we shall get those who participated in the murder like we did to those in the Busoga region where we recovered about 7 guns. 30 suspected criminals were arrested and confessed to have participated in the murders,” he added.

It seems Kayihura’s assertion has come to pass! It emerged yesterday that ever since Kagezi’s murder, there has been a huge rift within police and other intelligence organs, with the latter accusing the newly created Police Special Operations unit of carrying out parallel investigations which they say have since stalled the investigations.

However, Police spokesman, Fred Enanga dismissed the allegations and said police agencies were operating smoothly.

Police arrested over 43 suspects in relation to Kagezi murder but two months down the road, no one has been arraigned before court.

Efforts to get a comment from the police were futile as neither Police spokesperson Fred Enanga nor his deputy Polly Namaye could receive nor return our repeated calls to them.
