One Dead As Taxi Rams Into Train
By Serestino Tusingwire
One passenger of a commuter taxi perished and many others sustained severe injuries on Tuesday when it rammed into a moving train in Kampala.
The driver of the taxi insisted on crossing the railway despite a traffic control warning for vehicles to stop as the train approached.
Eyewitnesses said when he got to the point, he overtook a car that had heeded the call to stop and insisted moving on, only to fail to steer his vehicle past the rail track in time.
“A 14 seater taxi Reg no. UAY 386 rammed into a fast running train. Two of these passengers were critically injured, rushed to hospital by sympathizers and others escaped narrowly at Port bell road,” narrated the eye witness.
The driver and his conductor escaped and remain at large.
The taxi was coming from Bugolobi headed for the city centre when the crash happened.
Police, who got to the scene, blamed the accident on the errant taxi driver.
