Rakai Couple Held for Child Theft

Police at Kalisizo in Rakai District are holding a couple for allegedly stealing a new born baby from Kalisizo hospital in Rakai district.

The suspects were identified as Dismus Sabani, a Tanzanian National and his wife Harriet Nakimera, a resident of Nabigasa Village in Kakuuto Sub County, Rakai district.

It is alleged that Nakimera who spent at least two days at the hospital trying to hatch her plan to steal a baby from the facility became successful on Sunday when the mother of the stolen baby girl identified as Regina Nakaweesi left the baby in a cot for a bathroom session. Nakaweesi is a resident of Kiziba village in Kilumba Sub County Rakai district.

Southern Region Police Spokesperson, Noah Sserunjogi says police was able to trail the stolen child through counterparts at Mutukula border post.  Subsequently, after following a number of leads, the couple was arrested from Kasalu Village Mutukula Tanzania where Nakimera’s husband Sabani resides.

Sabani told police that he was not aware that the baby had been stolen. He explains that Nakimera has told him that she was expecting a baby, a few months after their separation. She had followed up with a phone call the day before to announce that she had delivered a baby girl before bringing the baby to his home.

Sserunjoji says that the couple will be charged with Child Trafficking.

Cases of child theft are becoming so common in the region this being the second case to be reported in a space of one week. In the first case Betty Nambooze, 40 stole a baby from Justine Namutebi upon delivery at Masaka referral hospital belonging.
