UGANDA LAW SOCIETY STATEMENT ON KASESE KILLINGS

Uganda Law Society (ULS) is deeply concerned about the unfortunate incident that took place in Kasese on 27 November 2016.

We condemn the killing of Ugandans on both sides of the conflict.

The unnecessary death and destruction of property, in Kasese reminds us of our painful past as captured in the preamble to the Constipation of the Republic of Uganda and the need to avoid violence as means of resolving disputes.

The ULS through its Human Rights and Strategic Litigation Committee is on the ground in Kasese to follow up this incident and we demand that the perpetrators be brought to book and account.

In the meantime we demand;

  1. That a commission of inquiry invoking both sides of the conflict the International Community and Human Rights players as observers be set up to investigate the cause of the said conflicts and to propose permanent solutions to state conflicts.
  2. That both sides cease fire and exercise maximum restraint to avoid further loss of life and property.
  3. The immediate and unconditional release of Ms. Doreen Mira and all reporters/journalists arrested for covering this incident.
  4. That all people involved in the abuse and violation of human rights be dealt with in accordance with the law and brought to book for the said violations.

For God and My Country
