Residents Buy Ambulance For Health Center

Obongi health center IV in Moyo district has received a new ambulance worth 45 million shillings.

The ambulance was bought through the community initiative led by the area MP Hassan Kaps Fungaroo.

Each resident contributed 2500 shillings towards the purchase of the ambulance to ease the transportation of patients from Obongi health center IV to Moyo district hospital, which is 60 kilometers away.

Fungaroo, who delivered the ambulance on Friday, described it as a dream come true especially for expectant mothers who he said have been suffering during emergencies.

He said their decision to buy the ambulance was not aimed at embarrassing government but to show that people’s initiatives can also work.

He says when they unveiled the plan to buy the ambulance in 2013 during the annual Obongi day celebrations, some government officials led by the RDC John Abingwa attempted to sabotage it in vain..

The news of the arrival of the ambulance has excited residents and brought a sigh of relief for mothers. Sarah Anzo, one of the residents who contributed 2500 shilling for the purchase of the ambulance says she thought her money would go to waste but she is happy that the ambulance has been bought.

She appeals to the managers of the ambulance not to misuse it so that it can last for long. Martin Apiku, the coordinator Obongi development foundation says they will leave the management of the ambulance to the health center administration after signing a memorandum of understanding with the district.

Jimmy Opigo, the Moyo district health officer says the initiative by the people of Obongi is good but says the project was heavily politicized.

He urges politicians not to abuse each other when they are involved in projects aimed at helping their people. John Abingwa, the Moyo RDC has not yet commented on the claims that he attempted to sabotage the project as his known phone number was inaccessible when our reporter tried to reach him.
