Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) has summoned South African-based Ugandan socialite Sulaiman Kabangala Mbuga to appear at the authority offices on Monday (today) over alleged tax evasion of sh118m.

Mbuga is accused of importing a Ferrari car model 2011 and declared it as a 2012 model to avoid paying 35% environmental levy.

According to a statement from the URA Public and Corporate Affairs office, Mbuga is required to assist in the probe into several instances of tax evasion.

“URA’s top commitment is to make sure everyone pays their equal share and reduce the tax burden on the few who are compliant,” the statement reads in part.

Adding: “We are dealing with Mbuga Sulaiman to make sure he pays the rightful tax and he has been asked to report on Monday and cooperate with investigations into these cases to bring them to conclusion.”

The summonses were prompted by purported defamatory claims by Mbuga about two URA staff: Emmanuel Lutaaya and Gregory Tukesiga.

The tax collecting body notes that Mbuga made unpatronising remarks on his social media page (Facebook) but deleted it and later showed remorse, blaming the misunderstanding on a clearing agent.
