Soroti Hospital Scraps Toilet Fees

The board of Soroti regional Hospital has stopped patients from paying for using toilet facilities in the outpatient department.

In December last year, we carried a story indicating that patients were paying shillings 200 each time they visit the toilet.

Some of the patients interviewed then protested the fee saying it was unnecessary since Soroti regional Hospital was a government facility.

Now, Dr. John Oumo, the Soroti Hospital Board chairperson says they resolved to scrap the toilet fee in their last board meeting in January 2015.

Dr. Oumo says all services in Soroti Regional Referral Hospital are free except in the Private wing. He says they have contracted some companies to clean toilets, compound and wards.

John Michael Ekipu, a resident of Okunai village says he was very grateful when he visited the hospital toilet on Monday that he didn’t pay any money.

Our reporter visited the hospital early this week and confirmed that none of the patients paid anything to use the toilets.

Thomson Obong, the Administrator Soroti Regional Referral Hospital says they have embarked on sensitizing patients on the proper use of toilets.

He says all patients and their attendants have been directed to use Toilet Paper and stop depositing polythene bags, cotton wool and leaves in the toilets.
