Khartoum/Juba — Sudan’s Defence Minister, Lt Gen Jamaleldin Omar, has died Wednesday, March 25, of a heart attack in South Sudan, where he was taking part in peace negotiations between the government and armed movements in Juba, a Spokesperson for the Sudanese army revealed
The Sudanese Minister of Defence arrived in Juba, capital of South Sudan, earlier this week, to the peace talks session on the final security arrangements for Darfur and the Two Areas (South Kordofan and Blue Nile state).
“We are here today to develop new security arrangements in the interest of peace and democratic transformation in Sudan,” Late Lt Gen Jamaleldin Omar told reporters upon his arrival.
Omar was a member of the Military Council that took power after toppling Omar al-Bashir last year and replaced with the sovereign council which runs the country under a 39-month power-sharing deal with a civilian government
This comes a few days after the prime minister Abdalla Hamdok survived assassination by a blast that bursted near his convey when he was heading to capital khartoum.
The death of Jamaleldin poises a significant challenge to the success of the transitional military council which is currently leading Sudan after the overthrow of Gen.Omar al Bashir in August,2019.
