Drama ensued at Malaba Town Council on Friday September 13 after angry tax collectors stormed the town clerk’s office and ordered him to strip naked in protest of none payment of their salary arrears amounting to 11 million shillings.
The tax collectors accuse Phillip Opolot Gonzaga, the Malaba Town clerk of deliberately refusing to pay them their salaries ranging from the months of May to August.
About 20 tax collectors peacefully stormed the town clerk’s office and ordered him to peacefully take off his neck tie, coat, shirt and pair of trousers.
Opolot unsuccessfully tried to call heads of department and technical staff to come to his rescue.
Officials including the security team deployed to guard the town council offices fled through the back door for fear of their dear lives after citing the charged tax collectors.
The intervention of George Alfred Obore, the LC III chairperson of Malaba town council saved Gonzaga’s life.
Obore advised the town clerk to acknowledge in writing to pay the tax collectors by 15th of next month, which he obliged.
He later accused the tax collectors of disrespect, embarrassment and treating him like a stranger they had never seen before.
