At least 16 people died in an accident that happened on Wednesday in Buikwe along Jinja-Kampala highway.
According to eye witnesses, the accident happened after a trailer crashed into a commuter taxi at Ssagazi village, Bulyantete near Mabira forest.
Traffic police are still investigating the cause of the accident but revealed that the crash occurred during the rain storm, which could have affected the visibility of the drivers.
“The driver and the conductor of the trailer are said to be safe, the driver has been taken to Kawolo hospital in a critical condition but the conductor is nowhere to be seen,” a police officer at the scene said.
Police said the crash victims were taken to the nearby Kawolo hospital for postmortem.
Rescuers struggled to remove the bodies of the dead because the trailer mangled the taxi that was carrying mostly students.
Resident however called upon the government to expand the road like the Masaka high way, saying the road is poor and can easily cause accidents.
