The Airtel National Basketball Women’s league came to an end on Thursday with former champions, UCU Lady Canons finishing top without dropping a single game in the regular season and only two in the playoffs finals.

Watching the regular season, it was almost impossible to predict that the defending champions KCCA Leopards would force Game 6 of the League season women’s final – Lady Canons were hungry and unstoppable.

Five titles in six years should be enough to give the Lady Canons bragging rights in the women’s category of the FUBA basketball league after the university side swept the KCCA 4-2 in the best-of-seven series in the playoff finals.

“It always feels great when you set a goal at the start of the year and you achieve it. We are excited that we are this year’s champions because we really worked so hard to get where we are,” explained Boniface Okello, UCU’s head coach.

On three occasions this season, UCU beat KCCA, a team who guarantee that purple perch every season thanks to unpaid allowances from management but the City side draw first-blood in the 2013 finals winning 56-52 and hand Canons their first loss in 27 games.

But, that hasn’t deterred them from booking a third successive appearance in the seven-game final which they lost 84-61 last night at MTN Arena Lugogo. Last year, UCU led 2-0 only to lose 4-3.

Leopards had crawled back in chic mode with a 84-48 win on Sunday to make it 3-2 but failed to do the same as well last evening, forfeiting their title.

UCU’s Peace Proscovia returning to the side from a memorable Six Nations Netball Championship in Singapore topscored for the Canons with a game-high 21 points off six offensive rebounds posting an impressive 7 defensive rebounds on the night. Proscovia who is considered among the best rebounders in the league showed height, anticipation and unrelenting appetite to fight despite the fatigue and jet-lag to help coach Okello’s side reclaim the title.

Franceas Nabulobi added 19 points, Moreen Amoding contributed 15 points and Purity Odhiambo chipped in with 12 points. Martha Soigi led KCCA with 17 points and Flavia Oketcho had 15 points.

UCU’s Purity Odhiambo, the 2011 MVP whose absence following the death of her mother contributed greatly to UCU losing last year was an integral member in the side this season.

The Mukono side is definately set to match the most successful team in Ugandan basketball, the Lady Bucks. They won the title a record seven times.
