Uganda Police Engaging in Inhuman Acts—Uganda Law Society Boss

Uganda Law Society (ULS) President Ruth Sebatindira said that the captured video clips of the standoff between Uganda Police Force officers and Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) on Saturday shows that police is actively participating in or encouraging acts which are heinous, inexcusable, grossly indecent and inhuman.

The saga ensued when police attempted to stop FDC officials from travelling to Rukunguri for a mobilisation rally, resulting into arrest of party flag bearer Dr. Kizza Besigye, Chairman Wasswa Birigwa, Kyadondo East MP Ssemujju Nganda, Busia MP Kevina Taaka, Jinja East MP Paul Mwiru and a number of youth.

The drama resulted into undressing of Naigaga Fatuma as she being arrested.

Video clips shows her being “dragged on road by police officers, as her blouse and legging were going down exposing breast and genitals  and then lifted onto the back of a police truck” as she fought for her rescue. After, she then gets up, undressed self to complete nakedness.

In a press statement yesterday, Sebatindira said that the conduct, against the Fatuma is a violation of Article 33 of the Constitution which “grants full dignity to women particularly in view of their unique status and natural maternal functions in society.”

“Uganda Law Society treats these events as an unacceptable, unfortunate and a backward assault on Ugandans by those supposed to protect them,” she said.

She said that Uganda Law Society is calling upon the government, its armed forces “everywhere, at all times, to respect and protect the rights and freedoms of all Ugandans irrespective of their political persuasions.”

She also said that Uganda Police Force should “immediately investigate this incident and take action against the perpetrators.”
