Uganda sliding into Police State — Amama Mbabazi

Former Prime Minister John Patrick Amama Mbabazi believes that Uganda is slowly turning into a police state.
Mbabazi, an independent candidate in the just concluded presidential elections who is challenging the re-election of president Museveni in the Supreme Court yesterday said that actions of police must be contained by the state.
He made the comment while addressing media after ransacking offices of lawyers representing him in the Supreme Court by people who Go Forward camp believes to be police agents.
“If the actions of the police are not contained by the state, Uganda is surely sliding into a police state,” Mbabazi said.
He noted that raiding of lawyers chambers is new occurrence. “It did not happen even in Iddi Amin’s time.”
The offices of Counsel Muhammad Mbabazi and Fred Muwema were raided on Tuesday night.
Mbabazi said that in both chambers, files and computers were carried away.
He noted that files and computers had evidence that was going to be presented in court.
“We don’t have direct evidence yet about the raid but both raids were carried out at the same time. This cannot be a mere coincidence.”
He claimed that “offices were raided by over 30 people most of whom were the police.”
Police has denied the allegations and “instituted a composite team headed by the Commandant Special Investigation Division, SSP Mark Odong” to investigate the incident.
