The Makerere University Council has not suspended the University Fees Payment Policy as alleged in some of the media houses, Ritah Namisango, the institution’s Public relations Officer has said.
She said, council has just endorsed the extension of the deadline to 12th week for only this semester saying the status quo remains.
“The Makerere University Council has endorsed the extension of the deadline for payment of fees and registration. For Semester 1, 2015/2016 Academic Year, the payment will be effected until the 12th week of the Semester,”Ritah clarified.
This follows a story that was run on this website alleging that the policy has been suspended.
This followed a closed meeting convened Wednesday night by the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Gen. Kale Kayihura, at the University Council room.
It was attended by the Chairperson University council, Dr. Charles Wana Etyem, the University Secretary, the Vice Chancellor, Dean of Students, former guild president Ivan Bwowe, and the current guild president David Bala Bwiruka, DPC Wandegeya, Chief Security Officer-ASP Jackson Mucunguzi
In the meeting, the IGP pointed out that he was against the indiscipline exhibited by some students, condemned looting and violence, and emphasized the need for dialogue and engagement.
On Monday students rose up against the 100% fees payment policy, paralyzing lectures and other activities for three days.
The strike that started as a peaceful demonstration turned chaotic. 36 suspects were arrested for vandalizing property within and outside the university.
